Intention, Goals, Self-Control, and Power: A Sufi Perspective

Mr. Gurdjieff observed, “Man such as we know him, the ‘man-machine,’ the man who cannot ‘do,’ and with whom and through whom everything ‘happens,’ cannot have a permanent and single I.”
In other words, when a human being is under the influence of their persona, they cannot properly form intentions and goals, cannot exert self-control. They have only the mere appearance of power in any real sense.
Sufism has developed methods for dealing with this problem of being under the sway of the persona, especially toward developing real self-control, without which everything within resists development. As we will come to understand in conversation this evening, self-control is not simply a matter of impulse management; rather, it helps point the way.
