“When you speak, take care to speak only from your own experience and your own state. You should not talk about things you have not lived.”
~ Ibn al-Husayn al-Sulami
The Arabic word “adab” is often translated into English as “manners” or “etiquette”, but it means a great deal more. It can be understood as the blueprint for how to be in the Work, in the world, and in community, as well as how to be a student, and how to be a teacher. In some ways, it is the most important part of any and all of these processes, as it demands the development of both conscience and foresight. Adab is considered so important that the Prophet Muhammad said, “The best among you in religion are those with the best adab.”
So let’s spend an hour or so discovering what Adab really is, and how we can use it as a guide to getting the most out of the Work.
