The Inner Story as Hypnotic Induction

Sufis understand that each of us has a hidden story, one that is usually just below the level of conscious thought, residing in what is known as the Alam al Arwah, the realm of spirits or ghosts.
We tell ourselves our story over and over, often at a near-unconscious level, and the story reinforces our beliefs about ourselves and the world, creating our personal reality tunnel.
This is also the method by which we create culture. From an early age, we learn the stories of our culture, and these stories have a profound effect on our worldview.
What we need to remember is that our stories are not “true”, not solid in and of themselves. They exist only as memories and are reinforced through repetition.
This is why Self-observation (muhasabah) is so important. It is a primary method for making our stories conscious, which in turn enables us to examine them critically. Once we have taken on this examination of our stories, we offer ourselves an opportunity to change any story we have held – or even to allow it to rest.
As Adyashanti has noted simply: “No story, no suffering.”
